Pain Relief

Both Acupuncture and Chiropractic are well known for how effectively they provide pain relief; unfortunately one of the most common causes of musculoskeletal pain is motor vehicle accidents. Whether you are a driver, passenger, pedestrian or bicyclist and you have been involved in an automobile collision, there are options to help you get care.

In the state of Pennsylvania, any medical bills resulting from the motor vehicle accident are paid for by Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance. Pennsylvania requires at least $5,000 in PIP coverage for you, and all passengers in your car. Most importantly, you are allowed to seek care from the health care practitioner of your choice, including chiropractors and acupuncturists.

When it comes to a motor vehicle accident, there is almost always a back injury involved.  People won’t always feel pain right away, but might start to experience symptoms a few days after the accident. The most commonly reported injuries are:

  • whiplash
  • low back pain
  • extremity pain with numbness or tingling
  • general muscle pain

Patients with whiplash may experience neck and shoulder pain and stiffness, headaches, trouble concentrating, dizziness, balance issues, restless sleep and irritability. Being involved in an auto collision also usually will have a large emotional component, it is important to address any resulting stress and anxiety.

Acupuncture helps relieve pain by releasing endorphins in the brain that block the transmission of pain signals, reducing inflammation and calming the autonomic nervous system. This helps the body relax and stimulates the healing processes. We combine traditional acupuncture with Trigger Point Therapy, a more aggressive, direct manipulation of the musculature that causes repeated, involuntary twitching, from the muscles that usually leads to an immediate reduction of the tightness and pain. Using TPT, we are able to directly target the tight areas in your body to help release the muscles and dissolve adhesions that cause pain. This allows for better circulation in the musculoskeletal system, increased range of motion and immediate pain relief.

Auto Accident Alert

We have recently seen an increase in patients seeking help for neck pain and back pain after an auto accident. It seems that driving in a car is one of the most dangerous things you can do. I have learned that the long-term effects of soft tissue injuries due to motor vehicle crashes (even at low speed) are one of the biggest public health problems today.

The best thing to do to avoid injuries from a motor vehicle crash is stay out of traffic altogether! This is one big reason I live above my office. However I realize this is not possible for many people. So here is an useful article on how to avoid an accident. But if you do get into a crash, and your injuries only seem minor, it is very important to see a chiropractor. Chiropractors are  equipped to relieve your pain and prevent the long-term effects such as arthritis.

Here is another very useful article that explains insurance procedures and the role of chiropractic if you have been involved in an auto accident: What You Should Know if You Have Been Involved in A Car Accident

If you are ever-so-slightly nerdy (like me) and would like to read up on whiplash injuries (or “Cervical Acceleration Deceleration Injuries”), here is an excellent web site with a ton of very well-researched data. For example this tidbit: 45% of persons with chronic neck pain attribute the pain to a past motor vehicle crash injury.

Most importantly, stay safe out there! It goes without saying, don’t text and drive (here’s what can happen if you do), stay off your phone, and watch out for the other guy who is not following the above advice. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
